Class Descriptions
ART WITH JAKE TEDESCO: (Gr. K-5) NEW This art program is for students who are really interested in learning to see to draw!! Through the course of instruction students are exposed to one and two point perspective as well as interior perspective, using themes that are interesting to young minds. We talk about negative space, shadows, highlights and ‘cast’ shadows. The students learn to blend colors with colored pencils, pastels and paints. We explore facial proportions, giving the students the confidence to draw a person or animal. References to artists of historical importance are made whenever possible and especially if it ties in with the subject matter. During the class, the student is given the freedom to make choices and to think about their composition and what is visually and aesthetically pleasing to them as an artist! BASKETBALL (K-5) Join the popular Coach Dimitri. This class will focus on skills, drills, fun and learning rather than team competition. Always a fun and active afternoon of basketball. Dimitri Upshaw
CERAMICS (K-5) Join this popular class, brought to you by the Art Curriculum Director of Ceramics To Go. New classes bring all new projects. Utilizing a variety of tools and techniques, students learn step by step how to create beauty from a ball of clay. Classes will focus on clay building and painting with glazes. CHESS (K-5) While learning to play chess, students will be taught critical thinking, mental discipline and problem solving skills, which can positively impact learning in the classroom. Designed to motivate and entertain, the curriculum introduces otherwise difficult concepts while teaching the art of chess. KARATE (K-5) This course will focus on self-defense, self-discipline and philosophy in the Martial Arts. Students will learn the basics, combination techniques and street safety including how to recognize dangerous situations and how to avoid them. This class is designed for both beginning and intermediate students. Our class applies fun, healthy and educational techniques while our students become more self-confident, physically fit and street safe. FIELD GOLF (K-5) In this innovative class you will construct your own 3-hole course on a field using moveable holes, tees and sand-traps. This course will introduce you to the fun of golf while playing and & practicing with safe, kid-friendly equipment on your own mini-course - with games such as Around the World, Golf Volleyball, and Putting Football. This is not mini-golf; but a challenging series that readies beginners to play on a standard course and is terrific practice for junior golfers of all levels. LEGO Building (Gr. K-5 ) Students get hands-on experience using LEGO to build machines, structures, and robots using the most advanced LEGO systems anywhere! Project difficulty advances with each student's experience and ability guarantying your child is never bored. Projects include, but are not limited to Crane, Scale, Windmill, Pneumatic Lift & Press, Rubber-band Racers, Solar Powered Car, a Robot Arm, Green House, Space Shuttle, and even a Wireless Autonomous Robots. LITTLE CLICK CLUB (Kinder mid day) An opportunity for kindergartners to use laptop computers and Imagine Tomorrow software to go on adventures emphasizing early childhood standards, while learning the basics of computer use in a fun and creative way. Advancing at their own pace, "Puterbug” detectives go on a unique mission each week. Parents and students have online access to adventure journals that help reinforce skills at home. MAD SCIENCE “Fun”damentals of Science! (K-5) The fun continues with this captivating assortment of Mad Science classes! Blend colors together, split up the rainbow, and see why lasers are so a-maze-ing. Hunt for hidden animals and minerals as we explore our earth and the animals that inhabit it. Learn the fundamentals of flight and build your very own glider. You will be a Top Gun in no time! Finally, transform the classroom into a crime lab to collect fingerprints & other clues to learn how science is used to solve real crimes! Mad Science LA
MATHEMAGIC: Einstein’s BrainBusters for Kids! (K-5) Wanna learn from the smartest man ever!?! MatheMagic combines the cool skills of our Einsteiny brain-busters like "Young Genius", "the Talking Calculator", and "X-ray Vision"!! Classes are taught by Professional Magicians! MUSICAL THEATRE: ANNIE (Gr. 1-5) The sun will come out tomorrow! Young actors are welcome to come and join us and shine on stage performing scenes and songs from the hit movie ANNIE! This class has something for everyone, first timers and advancing performers alike. Discover the joys of acting, improv, voice and speech, theater games, choreography and dance! Develop self confidence and team spirit. Parents and friends of our students will be invited to enjoy a special workshop presentation. PICASSO AND ME: (Kinder mid day class) Changed grade level Come learn about the Master Artists....From Monet, Frank Lloyd Wright and Ansel Adams to Renoir, Giacometti and Andy Warhol - students will examine master works of art, be exposed to many instructional techniques, learn art history, and create their own masterpieces! Perfect for all ages and lessons cater to each and every age/grade. Offered by Art to Grow On, Children’s Art Center, Inc.
READING PARTY (K mid- day class) Do you like pets? Have you considered owning a pet rock? Create the perfect personal pet. If so, join the fun! Listen to favorite classic and contemporary storybooks, and then create theme related artwork using a variety of media. A great way to supplement the classroom reading-readiness curriculum. Some of the activities will include, hunting for the golden eggs with the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk, taking a trip with Flat Stanley (Where will he go next?), and making a shell home the Hermit Crab will want to live in. Our new instructor, Sue Kneisley, has taught preschool, elementary and college level classes in art, writing and child development.
SPIRIT TUMBLING (K mid day class) Join our exciting new spirit tumbling program offered for the first time. Classes will focus on tumbling in a safe and inviting environment while learning school spirited cheers and chants! Our classes offer children a chance to experience the excitement of tumbling while incorporating school spirit dance & tumbling routines. This class begins with a full warm up and muscle stretch then onto forward rolls, back rolls, handstands, back bends and walkovers, cartwheels, extensions, flexibility and so much more... VOLLEYPOP (K-5) This exciting class seeks to create a challenging yet fun physical environment and outlet that encourages success and confidence through developmentally- appropriate volleyball instruction in a safe, caring, and supportive environment. Byron Goff, founder of VolleyPop is a three-time all-state and two-time All-American volleyball player with highly popular classes throughout southern California. Don’t miss out on the fun!!! WRITERS’ WORKSHOP (Gr. 2-5) This class will transform your child’s rambling writings into sizzling essays, intriguing interviews, flashy fiction, and reports that rock! Students learn the process of organizing their ideas into well structured essays based on the PK supported “signal paragraph” method, along with strategies for kick-starting every type of writing assignment. Children are guided in expressing their opinions and ideas in words while weaving compelling narratives. We explore outline, plot, setting, character, word choice, revision, and editing, as well as the mechanics of point-of-view, sentence structure, verb forms, tense agreement, punctuation, and grammar. Specific assignments include interview techniques, commercial writing, persuasive, expository, and narrative essays, photojournalism and more. Students work on the critical tools and resources needed for ideas, inspiration, and narrative details. Writer’s Workshop gives students the tools and confidence to make writing an enjoyable and valuable part of their lives. Janine Madrid has a BA in English, and a Master’s Degree in Advertising and Marketing. She has taught Writer’s Workshop since its inception at Pennekamp
